ABOUT THE PUZZLE: Madame X is a stunning and controversial portrait of a young socialite named Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau, who was famous for her beauty and scandals in Paris. Sargent painted her in a black satin dress with jeweled straps, one of which is falling off her shoulder. When he exhibited it at the Paris Salon of 1884, it caused a scandal for its perceived indecency and vulgarity. Sargent later repainted the strap to make it more secure, but the damage to his reputation was done. He sold the painting to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1916, calling it "the best thing I have done."
