More on the artwork:
The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke is a remarkable and intricate painting by the English artist Richard Dadd. He painted it over a period of nine years, while in an asylum for killing his father. The painting was commissioned by the head steward of the hospital, who admired Dadd’s talent and encouraged him to pursue his artistic vision. The painting depicts a scene from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where Mercutio describes Queen Mab, the fairy queen of dreams, and her chariot made of a hazelnut shell. Dadd imagined a group of fantastical creatures gathered around a fairy feller, who is about to split a chestnut with his axe to make a new carriage for Queen Mab. It is now in the collection of the Tate Britain in London.
